My 15 mins of Top Chef Fame?

24 Jun

Shortly after @dmbosstone posted his re-cap of last night’s Top Chef DC: Hail to the Chef my inbox started filling up with new messages. Odd right?

It turns out I am mildly famous in the DC blogging world today! We Love DC’s Patrick Pho selected my profound, 140-character insight tweeted out during the show last night as his “Tweet of the Day.” SCORE!

If you watched, you already know that this week’s challenge was to make a healthy school lunch for the students at Alice Deal Middle School. Like Patrick, I also loved this challenge because I believe that our society needs to do a better job teaching healthy eating habits at a young age.

However, in true Top Chef fashion all of the menus seemed out of place for the school lunchroom. Last time I checked the types of ingredients  being tossed around the Top Chef kitchen are only used when feeding the Romanov kids.

Which leads me to my now famous tweet:

You read that right – sherry. As in the alcoholic substance sometimes used to cook with and create that awesome “flame affect” when you pour it in the pan. Just a standard ingredient on every school lunch menu where the lunch ladies have time to braise the main course.

Oh well, I was impressed with some of the dishes turned out on a $2.68 budget per child.

Now that we are Twitter friends, I’m trying to convince Patrick that a viewing party is in order! We can live tweet it up and have our very own quick fire challenge. I think it’s what the people want…

Tales from the Basement…Kitteh that is

30 Jan

When my dear friend Caroline e-mailed me an update about the new kitty she had adopted I expected the sort of note that sends warm fuzzies radiating through your body. You can imagine my, er, surprise when I saw the words “OJ Gloves” and “dustpan” smattered throughout the text. Was this an update about her cat or someone trying to cat-nap her little feline friend?

It turns out she had adopted the real Basement Kitteh (aka Chicory). After a couple of weeks of loving Chicory the pet/pet owner bond has yet to form, i.e. Chicory prefers the nook behind the fridge to the nook of Caroline’s arm. While this is rather unfortunate for Caroline, her stories of bringing up kitteh are chuckle worthy.

It’s no secret that I’m not a pet person, but I practically beg Caroline for updates on Chicory’s socialization progress. Thankfully, she has carved out a little spot in the blogosphere to share her tales of taming a feral kitten. Check out Basement Kitteh and let Caroline know if you have the secret to winning over Chicory!

It’s Official – I’m a Blogger

9 Jan

I’ve felt compelled to start a blog for a while. But, the PR professional inside me has always held me back. This might seem counter intuitive to those who know me, since I help clients develop social media communities every day. However, my profession has taught me how important “blogging strategy” is and the elements needed for success. Blogging is a commitment, and I questioned whether it was one I could make.

For months I mulled over my dilemma, while my friends patiently listened to me drone on about what topic my future blog should address. The belief I needed a unique niche for my blog had me paralyzed. Finally, I decided to just take the plunge.

Rather than write about one aspect of life, such as my love for cooking, experiences being a young professional in DC, time spent volunteering, or views on the evolution of social media, I decided I didn’t need to limit the topic of my blog. That isn’t me, so why should it be my blog?

I promise there will be cohesion throughout my posts. My goal is to post one item a day that added an extra moment of joy, humor, or insight to my life. I hope those who discover and read my blog will also find that one post a worthwhile addition to their day  – hence the name of my blog, Daily Addendum.

I look forward to reading your comments, sharing a little about life in DC, and connecting with others who share similar interests.
